Why I Build on WordPress

Around four in ten websites run on WordPress according to W3Techs, which is not a reason on its own. These are the reasons that actually matter to a small business.
You own it outright. The files, the content, the database. Not a licence that lapses if you stop paying somebody. You can move it anywhere. If you fall out with me, or with your host, the whole site packs up and goes with you. Nobody can put the rent up. Hosted builders set their own prices and change them. WordPress itself is free and always will be.
You can edit it yourself. Log in, change your opening hours, swap a photo. No code, no waiting on anybody. It grows without starting again. Five pages now, a shop or a booking system in two years, same site underneath. It gives Google what it wants. Full control over structure, tags and speed, rather than whatever a builder decides to output.

WordPress, Wix or Squarespace?

I am not going to pretend Wix and Squarespace are rubbish, because they are not. If you want to build something yourself over a weekend, you have no budget, and you are content to rent your website for as long as you have it, they will do the job perfectly well. I would tell you that rather than take your money. Where they stop making sense is when the website matters commercially. You cannot take it with you. You are limited to what the platform decides to allow. The monthly cost never stops and it goes up when they say so. And when you want something specific, whether that is a page structure Google understands or a feature the platform has not thought of, you are stuck. WordPress costs more to set up and less to live with. You pay once to have it built properly, you own the result, and the only ongoing cost is hosting and looking after it. Over five years it is almost always the cheaper option, and it is certainly the freer one.

Moving From Wix or Squarespace

There is no export button that turns a Wix or Squarespace site into a WordPress one, whatever anybody tells you. What there is, is a rebuild, and it is usually a good thing rather than a chore, because most sites being moved needed refreshing anyway. I take your content, your images and your structure, rebuild it properly on WordPress, and keep your existing page addresses wherever I can so you do not lose the rankings you already have. You can see sites I have built for a coffee shop, a therapist and a rubber manufacturer, among others. Your domain comes with you. Your email keeps working. No. I build it, and if you never log in that is entirely fine. If you would like to change your own text and photos, I will show you the handful of things you are likely to want to change and you can ignore the rest.
It has that reputation because it is on four in ten websites and most of them are neglected. A WordPress site that is updated weekly, backed up twice a day, sat behind a firewall and scanned for malware is not a security problem. That is what the £35 a month is for.
Only if somebody installs thirty of them. I use as few as the job needs, and the hosting handles caching and image optimisation at server level rather than bolting on more plugins to fix the problem the plugins caused.
Yes, though it is a rebuild rather than a transfer, because those platforms do not let you export a working site. I carry across your content, images and page addresses so you keep the rankings you have.
The .org version, which is the self-hosted one you actually own. WordPress.com is a hosted service with its own plans and limits, which puts you back in the same position as Wix.
