Signs You Need a Technical SEO Audit

Technical problems rarely announce themselves. They sit underneath your website, quietly limiting how much of it Google can find, understand and rank.

Rankings and visitors have slid away, and the usual quick fixes haven’t brought them back.

Google Isn’t Indexing Your Pages

Search Console is full of “Discovered” and “Crawled, currently not indexed”, and important pages never appear.

A Big or Complicated Website

Hundreds or thousands of pages, filters and categories, and a growing sense that Google is getting lost in them.

A Migration or Redesign Went Wrong

A new platform, domain or design launched, and your search traffic hasn’t been the same since.

What I Check

What’s Covered in a Technical SEO Audit

Every audit uses your Search Console data, a full crawl of your website and a proper look under the bonnet, whatever platform you’re on.

Crawling and Indexing

  • Index coverage in Search Console
  • Robots.txt, XML sitemaps and noindex rules
  • Crawl paths, depth and wasted crawling
  • Canonicals and duplicate content

Site Architecture

  • How categories, services and pages are organised
  • Internal linking and orphaned pages
  • Faceted navigation and filter URLs
  • Pagination and parameter handling

Speed and Core Web Vitals

  • Largest Contentful Paint, INP and layout shift
  • Render-blocking scripts and third-party code
  • Image delivery and caching
  • Server response times and hosting

Redirects and Errors

  • Redirect chains and loops
  • Broken links and 404 errors
  • Server errors and soft 404s
  • Leftovers from past migrations

Structured Data and Markup

  • Schema for your business, products or services
  • Rich result eligibility
  • Page titles, headings and meta data at scale
  • Hreflang, where relevant

Platform-Specific Issues

  • WordPress, WooCommerce and Shopify quirks
  • Theme, app and plugin problems
  • JavaScript rendering
  • Mobile usability and security certificates

What You Get

An Audit You Can Actually Act On

Plenty of technical SEO audits are hundred-page exports from a tool. Mine are written by a person, prioritised by impact and explained in plain English.

A Clear, Prioritised Report

Every issue explained in plain English, ranked by how much it’s likely to matter, so you know where to start.

A Walkthrough Call

We go through the findings together, and you can ask anything you like about what I’ve found.

Clear Enough for Your Developer

Each issue comes with what to change and why, so your developer or platform support can get straight to work.

No Upsell Pressure

If your website is in good shape, I’ll say so. Not every website needs months of SEO work.

Pricing

  • A fixed price, not an hourly rate

Why Me

A Technical SEO Consultant, Not a Tool Export

I’ve worked in SEO for most of the fifteen years I’ve been building websites, with a particular focus on technical SEO, site architecture and ecommerce, and I publish my own search research based on real data.

  • You deal with me, not a junior with a checklist
  • Findings based on your data, not generic advice
  • Honest about what matters and what doesn’t
  • Experience with large ecommerce catalogues and filters

He’s very thorough in his research and advice and always makes solid recommendations that give results.

The Process

How a Technical SEO Audit Works

Four steps, and you’ll always know what’s happening and why.

A Quick Chat

Tell me about your website, your platform, what’s changed and what you’re hoping to achieve.

Access and Data

You give me access to Search Console and, ideally, analytics. Read-only is fine.

The Audit

I crawl your whole website, review your data and dig into anything that looks out of place.

Report and Walkthrough

You get a prioritised report, and we go through it together so you know exactly what to do next.

It depends on the size and complexity of your website. I’ll give you a fixed price once I know a little about it, before any work starts.

Access to Google Search Console is the most useful thing. Analytics access helps too. I don’t need to change anything on your website to carry out the audit.

If you’d like me to, yes. I’ll quote to fix everything in the report, or you can use it with your own developer. For ongoing help once the fixes are done, see my local SEO services.

Any platform. WordPress, WooCommerce and Shopify are the most common, but the same principles apply to custom-built websites and other systems.

A technical SEO audit covers any platform in depth. A WordPress SEO audit focuses on the settings, plugins and themes specific to WordPress websites.

It’s a good starting point. If the drop was sudden and severe, see Google penalty recovery as well.

Yes. Category structure, faceted navigation, product variants and crawl waste on large catalogues are some of the most common technical problems I look at.

Usually not. Most problems can be fixed on your current website. If a rebuild really is the better option, I’ll explain why, and a redesign keeps the rankings you already have.
