Create Your Link

A WhatsApp link, sometimes called a wa.me link or click to chat link, opens a new chat with your number without the customer needing to save you as a contact first.

  • Pick your country and type in your WhatsApp number
  • Add a message for customers to send, or leave it blank
  • Test the link to check it opens the right chat
  • Copy your link or the button code for your website

Your number needs an active WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business account for the link to start a chat.

Type it the way you would dial it. Spaces, brackets and the leading 0 are sorted for you.

0 characters. Customers can change it before they send.

Where to Use It

Where to Put Your WhatsApp Link

A WhatsApp link only brings in enquiries if customers see it when they are ready to get in touch. These are the places it tends to earn its keep for local businesses.

On Your Website

Add a WhatsApp button to your header, contact page and service pages. On a phone it is often quicker than filling in a form, and some people would rather send a message than ring, especially outside office hours.

On Your Google Business Profile

In your profile, go to Edit profile, then Contact, and next to Chat choose WhatsApp and paste in your link. Google only offers chat in some regions, and if you add text messaging as well, customers only see the text option.

In Your Social Media Bios

Put it in your Instagram, Facebook and TikTok bios so people can message you straight from their phone, without copying your number into WhatsApp first.

In Emails, Quotes and Invoices

Add it to your email signature, quotes and invoices. A customer with a quick question is more likely to send a message than write a reply or wait to call.

How It Works

What a WhatsApp Link Looks Like

There is nothing clever behind a WhatsApp link. It is WhatsApp’s own click to chat URL: wa.me, then your phone number in full international format. WhatsApp’s rule is to leave out any zeros, brackets or dashes, so a UK mobile starts 447.

Number Only

wa.me/447700900123

Opens an empty chat with your number. Fine for a header button where people already know what they want to ask.

With a Message

wa.me/447700900123?text=Hi

Adds a pre-filled message after ?text=. Spaces and punctuation have to be encoded, which is the part this generator does for you.

WhatsApp Business Short Link

wa.me/message/...

The WhatsApp Business app can make a short link for you under Business tools. It hides your number in the link, but you can only have one default message.

Message Ideas

Pre-Filled Messages That Get People Talking

An empty chat box is where a lot of enquiries stall. A short opening line gives people something to send, and if you use a different message in each place, you will know which link the enquiry came from. Copy these and make them your own.

Getting It Right

WhatsApp Link Dos and Don’ts

Most WhatsApp links that do not work fail for the same few reasons, and they are all easy to avoid.

Do

  • Use your number in full international format
  • Test every link on your own phone before you share it
  • Use a different message for each place you put a link
  • Fill in your WhatsApp Business profile with your hours and address

Don’t

Leaving the 0 at the start. A link to wa.me/07700900123 opens WhatsApp but cannot find you.

Using a number without WhatsApp. The link needs an active WhatsApp account on the other end.

Putting private details in the message. The message sits in the link itself, so keep it general.

Forgetting your old links. Change your number and every link you have shared needs replacing.

A WhatsApp Link Only Helps If People Can Find You

Making it easy to get in touch is the last step. The first is showing up when someone searches for what you do, with a Google Business Profile and a website that back each other up. That’s what I do.

Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit, so make as many links as you like. It works on phones, tablets and computers.

Pick your country, type your number in the generator above and copy the link. If you would rather do it by hand, write wa.me/ followed by your number with the country code and without the first 0, so 07700 900123 becomes wa.me/447700900123.

wa.me is WhatsApp’s own short domain for click to chat links. A wa.me link opens a chat with a phone number in WhatsApp, and can include a message that is already typed in and ready to send.

Usually it is the number format. Check the link has the country code, with no plus sign, spaces or leading 0. If the format is right, make sure the number has an active WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business account.

Only if the landline is registered with the WhatsApp Business app. If you use standard WhatsApp on your mobile, use your mobile number for the link.

The message is part of the link, so to change it you create a new link and swap it in wherever you used the old one. Customers can always edit the message before they send it.

Yes. On a phone it opens the WhatsApp app. On a computer it opens WhatsApp Desktop if it is installed, or WhatsApp Web in the browser.

In many regions, yes. Go to Edit profile, then Contact, choose WhatsApp next to Chat and paste your link. It is part of what I set up in Google Business Profile optimisation.

No. The link is built in your browser, so your number and message are never sent to me or saved anywhere.
